Should I still test radon levels even if I already have a radon mitigation system?
As Kansas City’s leading radon services provider for the past 15 years, our team at Certified Radon has fielded thousands of questions from homeowners and property managers. If one person has the question, it’s likely many others do too. We will be highlighting some of the top questions from customers in our Radon Q&A series over the next few months. This month, we’re starting with a question we receive often from homeowners.
Q: Should I still test radon levels even if I already have a radon mitigation system installed?
A: The short answer is yes, you should test at least every two years. But you may be asking, “Isn’t that what the mitigation system is for? Why do I still need to test radon levels?”
Whether you have a mitigation system or not, the only way to monitor, measure and determine if you have dangerous levels of radon in your home is to test. Radon is not detectable through smell, site or taste. Conducting a test is the only way to know the level of radon present in the air you and your family are exposed to in your home.
Mitigation systems are by far the most safe and effective ways of reducing and removing radon from your home, but testing every two years is still recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This will ensure you know for certain the air in your home is safe, and that the mitigation system is doing its job.
Regular checkups of your mitigation system is also recommended to ensure it is functioning properly. Certified Radon offers annual and two-year service checkups with our radon mitigation system installations to keep radon systems at peak performance and ensure peace of mind for our customers. If you own or recently purchased a home with a radon mitigation system and have questions about proper installation or function, you may refer to the American Society of Home Inspector’s standards for radon mitigation systems.
