Did you know that one of every three homes in the Kansas City area test positive for dangerous levels of radon?!
What is Radon and why is it dangerous?
- Radon is a radioactive gas created when uranium in the earth’s rock, soil or water decays. Exposure to this Class A carcinogen poses significant health risks. Radon exposure is the 2nd-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.
- Radon gas seeps into homes and structures from rock and soil beneath the foundation. Contrary to popular belief, radon can be found in both new construction and older homes and buildings. Certain areas of the region and country can produce higher levels based on the composition of the earth’s rock and soil in that area. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends action to mitigate radon if levels test at or above 4 pCi/L.
How does Kansas City rate for Radon?
The Kansas City region is a Zone 1 Radon area. This means predicted average indoor radon levels are greater than the EPA’s action level of 4pCi/L. In more simple terms, one of every three homes in the Kansas City area test positive for dangerous levels of radon. This includes Olathe, Overland Park, Leawood, Lee’s Summit, Liberty and all KC points between. The radon map shown here was created to assist national, state, and local organizations to better target internal resources as well as to implement building codes to address radon-resistance. This map is not intended to be used to determine if a home in a given zone should be tested for radon. Homes with elevated levels of radon have been found in all three zones. All homes should be tested regardless of geographic location.
