Autumn landscaping tips and ideas
Cooler days are ahead, my friends! We’re headed into the season of pumpkin spice lattes, cozy sweaters and football. The changing colors of fall give us an opportunity to update our landscaping for the season, while helping prep our yards for a glorious spring next year. Here are some ideas for you to help you enjoy your outdoor space this autumn.
Out with the old.
Remove dead and dying annuals, trim ornamental grasses, and deadhead spent blooms. This will help clean up your foliage and keep things neat through the winter season. Avoid pruning healthy trees and plants, as that can spark growth for plants that should be entering a dormant phase.
Clear out the clearance rack.
Take advantage of end-of-season sales on trees and shrubs. You have up until the first frost to plant new trees and shrubs and this can be a great time to get them started. You’ll be glad you did when spring rolls around!
Mulch it!
Fall is a great time to mulch. In fact, it is much better to mulch in fall than spring. Two to three inches of fresh mulch around trees and shrubs will help protect them from hard frosts and retain moisture during winter months.
Add some color.
Plant a few vibrant mums or colorful kale to give your garden a beautiful autumn glow.
