Your Work Environment & Radon Risk

What You Need to Know About Radon Exposure in the Workplace

During a high point of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Pew research found an astounding 71% of the U.S. workforce reported working from home on a regular basis. However, many of us are welcoming a return to our office environments. Whether working from home or an outside commercial office space, it is a place where we regularly spend several hours – and where radon exposure can pose a health risk. As awareness about the dangers of radon increases, more people are taking action to test for radon in their work spaces. At Certified Radon, we’ve had several customers reach out for radon testing to ensure radon levels in their home office and commercial buildings are not posing a health risk. We recommend you take the same action to create a safe and healthy work environment.

What is radon and why is it dangerous?

Radon is cancer-causing radioactive gas that has no smell, is invisible to the naked eye and has no taste. It is considered one of the most life-threatening forms of radioactive gas since it cannot be detected without proper testing. The Surgeon General and American Lung Association warn that long-term exposure to radon gas has been proven to be the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

Why should I be concerned about radon in my office space?

Radon gas seeps into structures from rock and soil beneath the foundation. It can be found in both new construction and older homes and commercial buildings – it exists in EVERY structure. The only way to determine if radon levels in your commercial building or residential property are above the EPA’s Action Level of 4 pCi/L is to conduct a radon test.
